Multi-word Verbs

Multi-word verbs são verbos que consistem de um verbo e uma ou duas partículas ou preposições.
Existem três tipos de multi-word verbs, que são: phrasal verbs, prepositional verbs e phrasal prepositional verbsPhrasal verbs tem duas partes: um verbo principal e uma partícula advérbio. Phrasal verbs são frequentemente, mas não sempre, menos formal do que uma única palavra com o mesmo significado.

Prepositional Verbs

Verbos preposicionados tem duas partes: um verbo e uma preposição que não podem ser separados um do outro. Exemplo: break into, do without, get off, get on, go into, look at, look after, look for, look forward to, etc.

Phrasal Prepositional Verbs

Tem três partes: um verbo, uma partícula e uma preposição. A partícula e a preposição não podem ser separados. Muitos desses verbos são muitas vezes utilizados em contextos informais, e seu significado é difícil adivinhar a partir de suas partes individuais. Verb+particle+preposition. Exemplo: catch up with, get on with, get away with, look up to, look in on, etc. Abaixo alguns exemplos.

Verbos marcados ❎ são separáveis. Se o objeto é um substantivo, ele pode ir antes ou depois da partícula. Se o objeto é um pronome, ele deve ir antes da partícula.

To explode (a bomb) / Lose one’s temper.

An enlarged version of a photograph / Cause to explode.
Break down
To stop functioning / To destroy or move something.
Break up
To end a relationship or partnership / Separate.
Bring (sb) up
To take care of and educate (a child).
Call back/Call (sb) back
To telephone or radio (a person) who has called previously.
Call (sth) off
To cancel or postpone.
Call (sb) up
Return or repeat a telephone call.
Carry (sth) on
To continue or to persevere.
Carry out
To put into practice or effect.
Catch up with (sb)
To capture especially after a chase / To reach just in time.
Check in (at...)
A ticket, to register the arrival of passengers (a hotel, etc).
Check (sth) in
Deliver something (luggage).
Check out (of...)/Check (sth-sb) out
To depart from a place / To investigate or prove to be in order after investigation.
Cheer (sth) up
Cause (somebody) to feel happier or more cheerful.

To become known. To be issued or brought out.

To change one's opinion or position

To rely or depend on.

Remove from a list. Take out.
Cut back on (sth)
To reduce or decrease.
Cut down
To kill or strike down. Make a reduction in.
Cut in
To interrupt. To move into a line of people or things out of turn.

Break the line of communication (telephone)

To separate from the others.
Do away with (sth)
To get rid of something or stop using something.

To do something again.
Dress up
To wear a costume or style of clothing. Put on special clothes.

To confront an unpleasant situation with resolution and assurance.

To break down, collapse. To suffer a nervous breakdown.

To fail to keep up a pace, lag behind.

To fail to meet expectations.

To feel love for, be in love with.
Fall out
To drop or come down freely under the influence of gravity. Come off (hair)
Fall over
To lose one's balance and collapse to the ground.

To discover or decide.
Fill (sth) in 
To write information in a blank space, as on a form. To act as a substitute, stand in.

To become or make more fleshy. Write all the required   information onto a form.
