Conjunctions / Grammar

Existem três tipos principais de conjunções.

Correlative conjunctions

Essa conjunção tem como objetivo ligar elementos que possuem a mesma função gramatical. Abaixo os exemplos.

Coordinating conjunctions = FANBOYS = For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

Essa conjunção liga duas palavras ou orações que possuem a mesma estrutura gramatical. Geralmente essa conjunção fica entre as palavras ou orações, ás vezes necessitando do uso de uma vírgula antes dela.

Subordinating conjunctions

Essa conjunção é diferente da coordinating conjunction, sua função não é para conectar ideias independentes como iguais, mas sim, para mostrar uma relação entre duas ideias em que uma delas é uma cláusula dependente ou subordinado. Necessitando de uma virgula entre elas. Uma oração dependente e uma oração independente.

Examples Coordinating Conjunctions
  1. My sister is married and (she) lives in England.
  2. I like him, but I don't like her.
  3. We didn't study, so we didn't pass.
  4. He could go to the concert or stay in.
  5. a) I'm not going. b) Nor am I.
  6. It's a small car, yet it is surprisingly spacious. 
  7. I listened to your problems, for you explain what happened.
Examples Subordinating Conjunctions
  1. As you know he lives in Brazil.
  2. The match ended before I got the time.
  3. I went home after the concert finished.
  4. Although it was snowing, we went out.
  5. If you leave me now, you’ll take away the biggest part of me.
  6. Whenever you call, I'll always remember the part of you so kind.
  7. Because I worked fast, Ifinished early.
  8. Do I have to wait until tomorrow?
  9. This is where I live.
  10. Let's have dinner out, unless you're too tired.
Examples Correlative Conjunctions
  1. Susana is both intelligent and pretty.
  2. Whether you stay or go is your decision.
  3. I neither smoke nor drink.
  4. We can go either by car or by bus.
  5. The director is not only intelligent, but also creative.
  6. She is as/so beautiful as her mother.
